Spearfishing Safety
Many divers truly enjoy catching, preparing and eating
fresh seafood meals.
Stan's advocates ecological harvesting of our marine
resources and promotes responsible diver practices for those
using specialized hunting equipment.
If you use a polespear or a speargun when fishing, Stan's
recommends you take a class and offers the following for
your consideration:
Speargun & Polespear Safety Reminder &
Tips!
Spearguns and polespears are dangerous weapons when
handled improperly.
Read Before Use!
- Never load your speargun or polespear out of the
water for any reason.
- Never fire your spear gun or pole spear out of the
water. The shaft may break the line and travel several
hundred yards or the shaft may "bounce-back" at you.
- Never point your speargun or polespear at anyone at
anytime.
- Always handle your speargun or polespear as if it
were loaded and ready to fire.
- Always keep the spear tip pointed away from your
body.
- Always put the safety "ON" before loading your spear
gun.
- Always load your speargun in two steps:
- Place the gun securely against your body
with the spear tip pointed as far away from you as is
possible.
- Engage the wishbone in the first notch of the
shaft, rest and repeat procedure for the second notch
as needed.
- Always look behind what you are shooting at! A rock
might cause the spear shaft to bounce back at you, or
another diver may be behind your intended target.
- Always anticipate recoil! A large and even a small
speargun or polespear is capable of removing teeth,
breaking face masks and potentially your nose!
- Always unload a speargun under the water before
removing from the water.
Additional Tips
- Never modify or change the operation of your speargun
by permanently disabling the safety lock.
- Always secure/lockup your speargun or polespear,
especially when children are near!
- Always rinse your speargun or polespear in fresh
water after each use.
- Soak and rinse your speargun or polespear in fresh
water after each use. Allow them to dry fully in the
shade before storage.
- For top performance, always inspect your speargun or
polespear for wear and tear (especially aging rubber) and
maintain your speargun.
- Always ask your dive store professional to service
your speargun or polespear when you're not sure how to do
so or when you are unable to do so.
- Store your speargun or polespear in a dry cool place;
we recommend you store the bands in a sealed plastic bag
and then place them in the refrigerator if at all
possible.
All speargun shafts should be lightly oiled
periodically.
